About Mud Australia

Since 1994, Mud Australia has created elegant and timeless porcelain homewares. Founded and designed by Shelley Simpson, our collection, available in 19 shades, is as much about self-expression as it is about functionality.

Our work is something that on its own offers a minimalist aesthetic but lives happily in any creative space or interior. Single pieces that are as happy hosting toast with butter as they are a Michelin star meal. One plate or a whole set. We like to think our pieces elevate everyday experiences, every day.

We’re committed to global values of craft and community and bringing those things to everything we make. From our studio in Sydney, we handmake every porcelain piece, actively building relationships with the people who buy and love our products across the world.

Mud Australia is a proudly climate neutral business. Certified through South Pole since 2020, we fund offset projects that we believe in to play our part in sustainable practices.

Mud Australia acknowledges the Gadigal peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the Eora Nation on which we create our products. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

We recognise their continuous connection to culture, community and Country and support the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Our Process

Using porcelain clay sourced directly from Limoges, France, the pigment is tinted to the body at slip stage to provide colour depth.

Clear glaze is applied to the interior of each piece leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface that becomes smooth with handling.

Environmental goals

We’re always looking to do things better — be it design, making, workplace, social or environmental.

Mud has always been dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint, but we want to make it official.

The 2019-2020 devastating Australian bushfires motivated us to make the commitment to become carbon neutral. In May 2020 Mud began work with certified agency South Pole to become Carbon Neutral by the end of 2020. We chose Australian and US offset projects to invest in.

Our Stores

The original Mud Australia store opened in Woollahra in 2007. Since then we’ve opened 10 stores globally. Over time we’ve established a design language with the Melbourne-based DesignOffice to create spaces that are quietly confident and personable. Iconic Vitsoe shelving systems and refined Barber Osgerby tables sit alongside bespoke joinery by JP Finsbury to showcase our full range of hand-made porcelain - providing a warm and welcoming environment for customers and staff.

Working at Mud Australia

Mud Australia’s continued success comes from the many people who work with us in our studio, office and stores.

We seek and recruit diversity for the many benefits it brings to our business.

We’re a fun but respectful workplace that loves employing people with personality, passion and skills.

Annex by Mud Australia

Many of our team have their own creative practice. To promote their creativity Mud hosts an annual event called ‘Annex by Mud Australia’ that provides an environment for them to exhibit and sell their art.

Well-being and community

The Mud Australia studio offers a nurturing, rewarding and fun work environment. We offer a Headspace subscription and host monthly team lunches to foster our Mud staff community.
